Maybe you have been thinking about your hair recently, bored playing with your split ends or maybe you haven't even given it a second thought.
Since self isolating I have been guilty of just chucking my hair up in a scrunchie, not brushing properly (I swear a had a bit of a dreadie situation going on) and I felt so bad because this is NOT like me at all- but I have been enjoying the super low maintence Miranda that I have become.
BUT in saying that, I just wanted to share with you some SUPER SUPER SIMPLE steps on what you can do at home to take care of your hair, without spending heaps and heaps of $$$$$$
1. DON'T OVER WASH YOUR HAIR
**But try to at least twice a week**
I have spoken time and time again about how important washing your hair is, especially for your scalp. When you shampoo your hair too often, you risk irritating your scalp; creating dry skin & flakiness.
ALSO! It can dry your hair out!! Stripping out natural oils that help your hair be more soft and shiny- ain't no body got time for that!
2. LAY OFF THE HEAT TOOLS
Yep! I said it! This is legit the most perfect time to be giving your hair a rest from curling and straightening (I know those lil fuzzies around your hairline are screaming for a break). I know that curly hair just is the *worst*, but if you're just hanging out at home with the kids, studying or watching Netflix, I'm so sure that you can survive a few days without taming the mane.
3. BRUSH IT
So simple, right!?! BRUSH YO HAIR! But also, learn how to brush it properly, and gently!!
Brushing your hair stimulates the blood circulation of the scalp, which is good for hair growth! Brushing those natural oils from your scalp down through your hair helps to strengthen them and helps with shiny-ness and smoothness.
Stop ripping through those knots in your hair! If you are one of my clients, chances are that you have a bottle of the goods ELEVEN HAIR CARE MIRACLE TREATMENT. Pop a pump or two in your hair (or any leave in moisuriser/detangler) and work from your ends up!!! When you start at your scalp brushing down when it's knotty you just create a big knot in the middle of your hair and then rip at it (I know coz sometimes I do this and realise that I'm doing it wrong). Starting at your ends softens your knots and then eventually you get that glide though the hair (OOOOOOH YEAH) and you're all sweet and knot free.
4. STOP TYING IT UP HIGH
And if you don't NEED your hair slick and tight/ if you are braiding your hair.... STOP using those little nasty hair ties!! UGH!! Pulling your hair back into a high pony every day can stress the hair follicles around your hairline and eventually pull hair out. High Pony tails can cause stress on the scalp (you know when its dirty and sore???) Also, if you are putting it up every day, you can stress your hair where the elastic sits and when you brush your hair it's delicate and can cause breakage. Try opting for a loose low pony tail in a scrunchie, use a clip OR learn to braid your hair!
5. EAT A BALANCED DIET
Seriously, drinking lots of water and eating a balanced diet has so much affect on your hair!! Just like a plant, hair needs water to grow! Water increases hair growth, and also the strength of your hair! Eating foods that are high protein, and are rich in Iron and B12 are super important!!
I have found this page with Foods that are best for hair growth here
6. INVEST IN A TREATMENT
There are sooo many great professional treatments available on the market!! I am one for supporting your local hairdresser (duh), however if you aren't wanting to leave the house then you SHOULD message your hairdresser and ask them what to do, whether they are currently doing home delivery or can recommend somewhere online for you to buy from!!
Personally, I'm begging you NOT to create-your-own-coconut-oil hair mask at home. Coconut oil is so great, for MOST THINGS, but it can build up in your hair and block it from the natural oils your hair already produces! This build up can also effect your hair colour!!
7. AVOID DIY HAIR COLOUR
YES, YOU, and the people up the back, can you hear me!? DO NOT COLOUR YOUR HAIR AT HOME!!! I cannot stress this enough!! You can do some reallllll damage to your hair if you attempt colouring it at home! (have you not seen the vids I share about people trashing their hair at home??) There are colour refresher products available, grey coverage textas & crayons, toners to do at home, but again, ask your hairdresser what they recommend!
BUT DO NOT TOUCH BOX COLOUR- these colours can react with our professional products in salon- making our jobs as professionals soooooo much harder and stressful!
Here's me today as I wrote this, self isolating! I've brushed my hair, washed it properly, done a treatment and gently blowdried it today! My hair is super curly so having it smoothed over actually makes my hair feel so much better!!!
If you have any questions about these at home tips PLEASE reach out!
